UDP (Developer View)
A connectionless datagram protocol. Independent messages, no ordering or delivery guarantees — a good fit for "send one, watch one come back" echo/probe debugging, and for multicast.
How to Use in the UI
- Create a UDP request: host
127.0.0.1, port18088. - Send a datagram; the server echoes it back.
- Multicast is supported (the sample server provides a multicast port).
How It Differs from TCP
| TCP | UDP | |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | Byte stream, needs framing | Datagram, natural boundaries |
| Reliability | Ordered, reliable | No ordering / delivery guarantee |
| Typical use | Long sessions, streaming protocols | Probing, broadcast/multicast, real-time |
Verified Behavior
hello-udp echoes identically. Multicast is covered by the automated case udp.multicast.
Gotchas
- Not receiving a reply doesn't necessarily mean misconfiguration — UDP can simply drop packets; try a few more sends.
- For multicast, pick the right multicast address and port.
